Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls News and Notes
The Boston Celtics should finally have Jayson Tatum back on the court. Tatum has missed five-straight games after three postponed Celts games following a positive COVID-19 test on January 8. The Celtics superstar has been recovering from being infected with the coronavirus, and Boston has sorely missed him. The team has dropped three straight before finally putting the brakes on the losing skid with a win against Cleveland on Sunday night.
Boston’s offense exploded for 141 points against the usually defensively sound Cavs in a 38-point victory. The Celts had three-quarters of 35-plus points before emptying the bench in the fourth quarter up a ton. Boston had already put up more than their season average of 113 points per game through three quarters.
Jaylen Brown again led the team in scoring, putting up a game-high 33 points. This performance a game after Brown put up a game-high 42 in a loss to the Sixers. The Celtics guard led the team in scoring in every game Tatum missed since going out with COVID.
Chicago comes in on a bit of a roll, winning three straight, including two games on the road before being stopped by the Lakers on Saturday night. The Bulls had a big third quarter, which kept them hanging with LA deep into the fourth but couldn’t complete the comeback. Before that, the Bulls won games in Charlotte and Dallas while downing the Rockets at home.
Chicago has had no problem scoring this season, putting up the fifth-most points in the NBA at 116 per game. That was a trend that continued during their three-game win streak as the Bulls put up games of 117, 125, and 123, all above their season average. The defense has been the issue with the Bulls, although they’ve been better than their third-worst league ranking lately. Chicago has given up over 118 points per game but held the Lakers to 101 on Saturday after holding Dallas to 101 and the Hornets to 110 during the win streak.
Chicago will likely be without center Wendell Carter, nursing a thigh contusion, while Boston won’t have rookie point guard Payton Pritchard. Their 2020 first round pick will be out at least a few weeks with a Grade 1 MCL sprain suffered in Friday’s loss to the Sixers.
The Celtics, who come in on the second day of a back-to-back, have hit the over in their last four contests on zero days rest. Boston has also failed to cover in their past five games as the road favorite. Chicago has covered eight of their past nine as an underdog and is 9-0 against the spread in their past nine on one day’s rest. Head to head, Boston has held the recent edge covering seven of their past eight against the Bulls, while the under was the play in nine of their past 11 meetings in Chicago.
